I often get a call from my Seattle clients to let me know their little one is arriving soon or just arrived and they want to create newborn portraits at the Sodo Studio. Frequently, this is not the first newborn in the family and I find that working with additional family members is very creative, dynamic and entertaining to say the least. Creative with so many more options to create beautiful images, and entertaining, by way of big brother or sister are usually at the peak of their "busy" 2 or 3 year old stage. We'll all be working half the game is keeping them entertained while keeping the newborn soothed.
The recent session highlighted below, is an example of such a session. Big brother was amazingly patient and cooperative for such a young fella for such a long length of time. His parents came prepared with a variety of snacks for him and a some additional "video" support.
Additional Tips: Wear light colored clothing, or similarly toned clothing. Newborn sessions can typically take between 1.5 and up to 2.5 hours due to babies schedule. Try to pack a few entertaining items that you know your older one likes. If you forget something, I'll have on hand at the studio: wipes, bottled water, mirrors/combs, toys for little ones including: puzzles, coloring books, building toys and books.
In the end with a little bit of patience we often have a great collection of images that will be heirloom pieces for your family. Slowing down for those two hours will be so worth it when you'll be enjoying the newborn family portraits in your home for a lifetime.
